The Manila Electric Company (Meralco), led by businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan, has intensified its campaign to clear tangled and unauthorized wires in partnership with the Makati local government unit (LGU). The effort is part of a broader push to improve public safety, enhance urban aesthetics, and ensure reliable power service for the city’s residents.

In the latest operation along Camia Street in Makati, Mayor Nancy Binay highlighted the value of collaboration between local governments and the private sector in addressing problems caused by urban blight. She also reminded telecommunications and internet service providers of their responsibility to secure proper permits before attaching wires to Meralco poles.

“This partnership shows that when the public and private sectors work hand in hand, we can find lasting solutions to issues that directly affect our communities,” Binay said.

For 2025 alone, Meralco has already removed more than 2,000 kilograms of unauthorized wire attachments in Makati. These often-overlooked hazards not only affect the city’s appearance but also pose safety risks to both residents and workers.

Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga reaffirmed the company’s commitment to maintaining safe and reliable service through proactive efforts.

“Meralco will continue to conduct more operations like these with the help of LGUs to maintain not only the integrity of our distribution facilities but most importantly to ensure everyone’s safety,” Zaldarriaga said.

With the Makati LGU’s backing, Meralco aims to expand these operations across the city, underscoring the importance of collective responsibility in keeping urban spaces both safe and livable.
