Meralco Teams Up With U.S. Firm Itron To Build A Smarter Energy Grid

The country’s largest power distributor, Meralco, is taking another big step toward the future of energy — and it’s doing so with a global tech powerhouse.
Meralco has officially partnered with Itron, Inc., a U.S.-based leader in energy and water resource management, to accelerate its smart grid modernization program. The goal: create a more responsive, efficient, and customer-friendly power system fit for the digital age.
Under this partnership, Meralco will deploy Itron’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) — a smart technology that allows real-time, two-way communication between the company and its customers. In simpler terms, this means faster outage detection, more accurate billing, and better transparency in energy use.
Itron’s system, powered by its Gen5 solution, will initially manage 73,000 endpoints across Metro Manila, with plans to expand across Meralco’s entire service area in the coming years.
“We’re proud to be part of Meralco’s smart grid journey,” said John Marcolini, Itron’s Senior Vice President for Networked Solutions. “Our Gen5 solution gives Meralco flexibility to scale and future-proof its infrastructure — helping them deliver more reliable and efficient service to customers.”
For Meralco, this collaboration isn’t just about technology — it’s about transforming how electricity is delivered and managed.
“With Itron’s Gen5 solution, we’re building a smart grid that supports the country’s digital economy while enhancing our service for customers,” said Ronnie L. Aperocho, Meralco’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “This is a step toward a smarter, more sustainable energy future for the Philippines.”
Beyond improving operations, the partnership also lays the groundwork for future innovations such as integrating electric vehicles, renewable energy sources, and advanced outage management systems.
Meralco, which serves over 8 million customers, said it remains committed to providing 24/7 reliable power while investing in cutting-edge technology to make the grid more resilient and sustainable.
In short — Meralco isn’t just keeping the lights on. It’s lighting the way toward the next generation of smart, clean, and customer-focused energy in the Philippines.
