Meralco's Power Move: Making The Grid Smarter And Greener For Everyone

The energy game in the Philippines is changing—and Meralco is right at the forefront, making sure we’re all ready for a cleaner, smarter future.
At the recent Berde Renewables Collaboration Summit 2025, Froilan J. Savet, Meralco’s First Vice President and Head of Networks, talked about how the way electricity flows is no longer a simple one-way street. Thanks to the surge in solar panels on rooftops, batteries, electric vehicles, and microgrids popping up everywhere, power now moves in multiple directions. That’s why utilities like Meralco have a bigger role than ever in keeping everything running smoothly.
So, how is Meralco handling this? They’re upgrading their whole distribution system as part of a big modernization push. The goal? To integrate all these new renewable energy sources—what they call Distributed Energy Resources or DERs—seamlessly into the grid.
Savet put it simply: “We’re not just delivering electricity to homes and businesses anymore. We’re building a clean, flexible, and intelligent energy system that supports a decentralized grid.”
Behind this effort is what Meralco calls their 4-I Framework:
• Integration means every new renewable energy connection actually strengthens the grid instead of causing problems.
• Innovation brings in cool new tech like battery storage, smart inverters, and microgrids that boost the grid’s intelligence and reliability.
• Intelligence uses artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor and control the grid in real time, making sure issues get spotted and solved faster.
• Interoperability ensures that all these different technologies play well together—safely, smoothly, and with strong cybersecurity.
And Meralco isn’t stopping at tech upgrades. They’re also training their team to handle the more complex, modern grid and working hand in hand with regulators to align with the country’s energy goals.
“The energy transition is happening right now,” Savet said. “The challenge is how fast utilities can adapt without compromising grid stability. At Meralco, we’re not just getting ready—we’re leading the way.”
So, if you’re wondering what powers your lights and gadgets tomorrow, rest assured—Meralco’s busy making sure it’s smarter, cleaner, and ready for the future.
