Tropical Depression "Mirasol" is continuing its journey across Northern Luzon and is now located over Ifugao, according to the latest bulletin from PAGASA.
As of 11:00 AM today, September 17, the center of the tropical depression was spotted in the vicinity of Alfonso Lista, Ifugao. Mirasol currently packs maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near its center, with gusts reaching up to 90 km/h. It is moving northwestward at a speed of 15 km/h.
Wind Signal No. 1 remains in effect for a number of areas across Luzon, including Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, and the Cordillera Administrative Region provinces. Residents in these locations can expect strong winds and are reminded that even minimal impacts can be a threat to life and property.
Forecasters note that the storm's winds extend up to 200 km from its center. However, local winds may feel stronger, particularly in coastal and mountainous areas directly exposed to the weather system.
Looking ahead, PAGASA warns that Mirasol is likely to intensify into a tropical storm once it re-emerges over the Luzon Strait later today or this evening. This potential strengthening could lead to the hoisting of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 2 in some parts of Northern Luzon.
In addition to the direct effects of Mirasol, the Southwest Monsoon is expected to bring strong to gale-force gusts to other parts of the country, including Metro Manila and Western Visayas, over the next few days.
Mariners are also advised to be cautious, as up to moderate to rough seas are forecast along the eastern and northern seaboards of Luzon. Small vessels are encouraged to avoid venturing out to sea under these conditions.
PAGASA's latest track shows Mirasol continuing its northwestward path and is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility tomorrow morning or afternoon. While it crosses the Luzon landmass, it is projected to maintain its current strength, but once over the sea, further intensification is not ruled out.
Local disaster management officials and residents are urged to stay updated on the latest weather bulletins and follow any evacuation or safety instructions given by authorities.
