MMDA Continues To Produce Eco-Friendly And Useful Byproducts From Waste

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) continues to advance its innovative approach to waste management through the Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility (ISWMF) located at the Vitas Pumping Station. From April 2021 to June 2025, the agency’s Brick Making Facility produced a total of 110,275 eco-bricks, 368 concrete barriers, and 17,271 hollow blocks.
A significant part of this initiative is the wide distribution of these byproducts to local government units, barangays, and MMDA offices. Of the total production, 102,592 eco-bricks and 15,591 hollow blocks have already been distributed to communities and offices, while all 368 concrete barriers have been turned over to the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center (TEC).
The production process begins with waste collection from the Vitas Pumping Station. Plastics and biowaste collected from waterways are cleaned, segregated using the Solid Waste Granulator, and processed into materials used for eco-bricks, eco-hollow blocks, and eco-concrete barriers.
The ISWMF forms part of the Metro Manila Flood Management Project (MMFMP) Phase 1, which aims to improve flood control in selected areas of Metro Manila. Beyond reducing waste and creating valuable materials from recycled resources, this initiative represents a significant step toward a cleaner, safer environment for the city’s residents.
