In a heartfelt message to her fans, acclaimed actress and former boxing champion Lee Si-young has announced that she is expecting her second child — a decision she made through in vitro fertilization (IVF), just months after finalizing her divorce.
On her Instagram account (@leesiyoung38), the 43-year-old actress opened up about the deeply personal choice, explaining that she felt it was important to address the news herself to prevent “misunderstandings and speculation.”
Lee reflected candidly on her path to this moment. “Eight years ago, I became a mother to my most precious being, Jeong-yoon,” she wrote. “At the time, I was younger, less prepared, and filming a drama. I spent much of that time feeling anxious and even regretful — and I’ve carried that guilt for years. So I promised myself: if life ever came to me again, I would never repeat those mistakes.”
It was during her marriage that Lee underwent IVF procedures in hopes of a second child. But as her marriage unraveled and divorce proceedings began, her fertilized embryos — frozen and nearing the end of their legal storage period — became a poignant reminder of the hopes she once had.
“When the five-year storage period was about to expire, I had to make a choice,” she shared. “I couldn’t bear to discard them. Even though my former partner did not agree, I decided to carry the full weight of this choice myself.”
Lee described her first child as the reason she was able to endure the hardships of marriage — calling motherhood the “reason for my existence” and a source of “miraculous strength.” This time, she said, she made her decision knowing there would be challenges, but believing it was the most meaningful choice she could make for herself and her future.
“I am filled with nothing but gratitude for this new life growing inside me,” she wrote. “And for the first time in a long while, I feel at peace.”
The actress also acknowledged the public scrutiny that may follow, pledging to accept any criticism or advice with humility and to raise her children with deep responsibility and care.
“I know I’m still far from perfect,” she concluded. “But I will live sincerely, so that this child who came back to me is never left wanting. Thank you for reading.”
Lee Si-young debuted as an actress in 2008 and quickly rose to prominence in hit dramas like Boys Over Flowers and Poseidon, while also earning accolades as an amateur boxer. Known for her candor and determination, her story continues to resonate with many — this time as a powerful testament to motherhood, choice, and resilience.
