Great news for our healthcare system. The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has approved the creation of 1,224 additional positions for the University of the Philippines - Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH). This means more doctors, nurses, and support staff will soon be joining the country’s largest public hospital to provide even better care—especially for indigent Filipinos.
This move comes after a request from UP-PGH to strengthen its manpower and improve hospital services. With this approval, the hospital is set to boost its capacity to serve patients who rely on its top-notch medical care.
“UP-PGH is home to some of the country’s most skilled medical professionals. With this additional manpower, the hospital will continue to be a beacon of medical excellence in the country,” DBM Secretary Amenah Pangandaman said.
She also emphasized that this aligns with President Bongbong Marcos’ directive to ensure Filipinos receive efficient and reliable healthcare services.
More Staff, Better Services
Currently, UP-PGH operates with 1,334 beds as a Level III general hospital. Given its size, the DBM considered the standard staffing requirements for a hospital of this capacity in approving the new positions.
The hiring will happen in four phases, with the first batch of new hires joining in early 2025, followed by additional recruits in late 2025, 2026, and 2027. Each phase will depend on how quickly the previous positions are filled.
What This Means for Patients
This expansion is expected to ease the workload of existing staff, improve patient care, and ensure more Filipinos receive the medical attention they need. As the country’s largest public tertiary hospital, UP-PGH plays a crucial role in serving those who need it most.
With more healthcare professionals on board, we can expect shorter waiting times, better services, and an overall stronger healthcare system.
