After a heartbreaking start to the day at NAIA Terminal 1, authorities have reopened Departure Entrance-1 by noon, just hours after a tragic vehicular accident claimed two lives — including that of a 5-year-old girl.

According to initial reports, the SUV involved suddenly accelerated and crashed through the outer railing, slamming into the walkway just outside the terminal’s departure area early Sunday morning, May 4. Investigators say the driver may have accidentally hit the gas instead of the brakes.

Following the accident, the area was immediately secured and access restricted while emergency responders rushed to assist the victims. Four individuals were injured and are now receiving medical care, while the driver of the vehicle has been taken into police custody.

New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), the group managing the terminal under the leadership of President Ramon S. Ang, has been actively supporting response efforts and extending help to those affected. In a statement, Ang expressed deep sorrow over the incident and pledged to shoulder all medical expenses of the injured and provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased.

“This is a very tragic incident. Our priority now is to make sure the victims and their families receive the support and care they need,” Ang said.

Despite the grief and shock surrounding the event, operations at the terminal have resumed. Entrance-1 was cleared and reopened to passengers at 12 noon. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash and are urging the public not to speculate while awaiting official updates.

The NNIC has also thanked passengers for their patience and understanding, as they work closely with the PNP, MIAA, and other agencies to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being.
