The resignation of National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Jaime Santiago is now in the hands of Malacañang, awaiting formal acceptance.

Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro confirmed on Wednesday that Santiago had submitted an irrevocable resignation letter. “The resignation of NBI Director Jaime Santiago is up for acceptance,” Castro said, noting that it has yet to be disclosed whether the President and Santiago had any discussion prior to his decision.

Questions have been raised about how this leadership shift might affect the bureau’s ongoing cases, particularly the high-profile probe into the missing “sabongeros” (online cockfighting enthusiasts). Castro assured, however, that the work of the NBI will continue uninterrupted.

“There are still many credible and trustworthy officials and investigators within the NBI who remain committed to their tasks,” she said.

As for Santiago’s possible successor, no shortlist has been made public. The Palace has yet to release details on who may be tapped to take the reins of the country’s primary investigative body.

Santiago, a former judge known for his strong stance against crime, has led the NBI since 2023. His resignation, while not unexpected, raises questions about the bureau’s direction in the months ahead.
