NBI Recommends Charges Against Senators, Officials In Flood Control Probe
FILE
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is recommending charges against a group of high-profile individuals, including Senators Joel Villanueva and Jinggoy Estrada, following a probe into alleged anomalies in flood control projects.
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla announced that the NBI is recommending the filing of charges for indirect bribery and malversation of public funds against the two senators, along with Rep. Zaldy Co, former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Undersecretary Roberto Bernardo, former Congresswoman Mich Cajayon-Uy, and former Bulacan District Engineer Henry Alcantara.
The recommendations stem from an investigation into the misuse of public funds intended for flood control.
Interestingly, Justice Secretary Remulla shared a new development regarding one of the individuals named in the report. He stated that former DPWH Bulacan District Engineer Henry Alcantara has expressed willingness to return the money he allegedly received from these projects.
According to Remulla, Alcantara has shown gestures or willingness toward restitution. "Yes, we haven't gotten to the bottom of everything yet but the gesture for restitution is there," Remulla said.
This comes after Alcantara began the process of providing a sworn statement to the Department of Justice (DOJ) as he seeks to be included in the Witness Protection Program.
