The numbers are still coming in, but the heartbreak is already felt.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday it is verifying 52 reported deaths in the wake of Typhoon Tino (international name: Kalmaegi) — a storm that left communities across the Visayas battered and grieving.
According to the agency’s latest report, 50 of the fatalities were from Region 7 (Central Visayas), while two came from Region 8 (Eastern Visayas). The figure has more than doubled from the initial 26 deaths earlier reported.
At least 10 people were injured and 13 remain missing, with authorities still confirming the details.
The impact of Typhoon Tino has been widespread — affecting over 203,000 families, or more than 705,000 individuals across seven regions, including Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Caraga.
For now, 10,981 families are seeking refuge in nearly 3,900 evacuation centers, while over 27,000 others have taken shelter with relatives and friends.
Even before Tino made landfall, about 70,000 families were already evacuated as a precaution — a move that likely saved countless lives, though not enough to spare the nation from grief.
As authorities continue their verification and relief efforts, the country mourns — once again — the lives lost to nature’s wrath.
