Nepo Babies May File Cybercrime Complaints Against Online Bashers

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla emphasized that individuals being labeled as nepo babies on social media have the right to seek legal remedies if they believe they are being subjected to online harassment or defamation.
“Pwede! Pwede! Pwede! Cybercrime! Cybercrime! Cybercrime!” Remulla declared, stressing that depending on the nature of the allegations, certain online posts can fall under cybercrime violations such as cyber libel. He explained that while the term “nepo baby” has become a viral label, the legal implications depend on whether the content posted constitutes malicious or defamatory attacks.
The discussion arose following the online trend tagging children, spouses, and relatives of politicians, government officials, and contractors as nepo babies. Critics argue that some of these individuals enjoy wealth and privilege allegedly linked to government funds or influence. Social media users have circulated memes, unearthed old videos, and openly criticized those associated with public officials and infrastructure projects.
Remulla pointed out that those who feel wronged have legal options available:
“May mga tanggapan ng piskal sa bawat lungsod at lalawigan. Nandiyan sila para tumanggap ng reklamo,” he said, reminding the public that anyone can file a complaint if they believe they have been unfairly targeted.
The justice chief’s remarks come in the wake of heated online discourse surrounding flood control projects and accusations of corruption, which have further fueled public scrutiny of political families and their perceived privileges.
