MANILA — A new chapter has begun in the Philippine Senate. In a series of significant appointments, a new set of committee chairpersons was elected during Tuesday's plenary session, September 9, 2025, following a recent shift in the Senate’s top leadership. The reshuffle is poised to redirect the focus and priorities of several key committees.

The changes began with the election of Senator Alan Peter S. Cayetano as the new Senate Minority Leader, a position that places him at the forefront of the opposition. His appointment is expected to provide a strong voice in scrutinizing the majority's legislative agenda.

The new leadership lineup also includes Senators Risa Hontiveros and Joseph Victor "JV" Ejercito, who have been named Deputy Majority Leaders. On the other side of the aisle, Senators Rodante Marcoleta and Joel Villanueva will serve as Deputy Minority Leaders. These roles are critical for managing the legislative flow and ensuring party discipline within their respective caucuses.
Beyond the floor, the real work of the Senate happens in its committees. The newly designated committee chairpersons bring a mix of experience and fresh perspectives to their new roles.

Senator Panfilo Lacson has been entrusted with the powerful Committee on Accountability of Public Officers and Investigations, commonly known as the Blue Ribbon Committee. Known for his no-nonsense approach to governance and his long history in public service, Lacson's leadership here signals a strong focus on rooting out corruption and promoting government transparency.

Meanwhile, Senator Raffy Tulfo, a popular figure known for his public service programs, will now lead the Committee on Labor, Employment and Human Resources Development. This appointment places him in a key position to address the pressing issues facing Filipino workers both here and abroad.

Veteran Senator Loren Legarda has been handed the reins of three important committees: Higher, Technical and Vocational Education; National Defense and Security; and Accounts. Her extensive background in legislative work and policy will be instrumental in steering these diverse committees.

Senator JV Ejercito, in addition to his role as Deputy Majority Leader, will chair the Committee on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs, a position that puts him at the center of the country's ongoing efforts to maintain peace and order.

Finally, Senator Risa Hontiveros, another Deputy Majority Leader, will take on the chairmanship of the Committee on Health and Demography, a timely assignment given the country's ongoing public health challenges.

As the Senate settles into its new structure, all eyes will be on these committee leaders to see how they will shape the legislative landscape and address the nation's most critical concerns.
