KATHMANDU – Newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki has declared that she did not seek her new position for power or prestige. Speaking to high-ranking officials at Singha Durbar on Sunday after assuming office, she stated her intention to hold elections and step down within six months.
"I didn't come here out of desire," Prime Minister Karki said, explaining that she felt compelled to take the role after public calls for her to lead. "I have not come to enjoy the taste of power. It's not my time [for that]. I will stay for only six months, then leave no matter what, and be free after doing my work. We are determined to hand over the responsibility to the new members of parliament and ministers who will come after." She emphasized that this resolve would not be possible without everyone's cooperation.
Prime Minister Karki also expressed deep concern over the targeted attacks and arson that have damaged critical institutions like the Supreme Court and Singha Durbar. While physical structures can be rebuilt, she lamented that the destruction of records and files has left the country at a "zero" point. She vowed to investigate the incidents and take action against those responsible for destroying the infrastructure and erasing the records.
