No Shakeups Here: House Leaders Confident Romualdez Will Keep Speakership In 20th Congress

In case you’re wondering if there’s going to be a leadership shakeup in the House of Representatives—House leaders say, “Not happening.”
Deputy Speaker David “Jay-Jay” Suarez and Quezon Rep. Mark Enverga are standing firmly behind Speaker Martin Romualdez, saying they’re confident he’ll continue leading the House in the upcoming 20th Congress.
Both lawmakers brushed off rumors of any potential challengers eyeing the top post, stressing the importance of continuity.
“We believe in the past three years that we have seen the performance of the House. We’ve seen how we can deliver on the legislative agenda of our President,” Suarez said during a chat with reporters. “And we’ve also seen how we can manage our leadership. Continuity is important for Congress, and we’re fully supportive of Speaker Martin.”
Suarez is a known Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) loyalist—same party Romualdez heads. Enverga, meanwhile, is with the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), and he shares the same confidence in Romualdez’s leadership.
“Speaker Martin will continue his term. So, it will continue,” Enverga simply put.
As for the alleged brewing interest in the Speakership from other members of Congress? Enverga said he hasn’t heard of any real contenders.
So, for now, it looks like the House leadership isn’t going anywhere. Speaker Romualdez seems to have the backing he needs to keep that gavel firmly in hand.
