The remains of Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Leah Mosquera, a caregiver who tragically lost her life in a missile strike in Rehovot, Israel last June, were brought home to the Philippines yesterday, July 23, 2025.
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, Israel Ambassador Ilan Fluss, and representatives from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) joined the grieving Mosquera family in receiving her remains. The atmosphere at the airport was somber yet dignified, a reflection of the nation's collective mourning for one of its own.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to the Mosquera family. Rest assured that the DMW and OWWA will continue to provide all forms of assistance during this time of grief as directed by our President,” said Secretary Cacdac.
OFW Mosquera had been working in Israel as a caregiver for several years before her untimely death on June 15, the result of an Iranian missile attack. In the days leading up to her repatriation, the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv, together with the DMW Migrant Workers Office, held a simple yet heartfelt memorial mass in her honor.
The government, through a coordinated effort by the DMW, OWWA, and the Philippine Embassy in Israel, ensured that the cost of repatriating her remains was fully covered. Her sister, also an OFW, was safely brought home as well. The family will receive additional assistance, including financial and burial support, as they cope with their loss.
Leah Mosquera’s story is a painful reminder of the risks many OFWs face while working abroad. More than just a worker, she is remembered as a modern-day hero — someone who chose to care for others, even in the face of danger. Her life and service will not be forgotten.
