Outrage Over Pregnant Blue Shark Killing In Agusan Del Norte-DA-BFAR Issues Strong Statement

The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) Caraga isn’t mincing words when it comes to the tragic killing of a pregnant blue shark in Tubay, Agusan del Norte. The agency strongly condemns the incident, calling on the public to recognize the crucial role sharks play in maintaining the health of our oceans.
A Shocking Incident in Tubay
The blue shark (Prionace glauca), which measured nearly three meters long, was spotted struggling in the waters off Brgy. Cabayawa on March 18, 2025. Mistaken for a large tuna or marlin, the weakened shark—already suffering from a hook in its mouth and injuries on its body—was attacked and captured by beachgoers out of fear.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, the shark had already started giving birth. A total of 30 pups were released, with 29 of them successfully returned to the sea.
Why This Matters
Sharks aren’t just fearsome predators—they’re ocean guardians. As apex predators, they help regulate marine life, keeping ecosystems balanced and ensuring the health of coastal waters. The loss of a single pregnant shark is a blow to marine biodiversity, affecting not only the ecosystem but also local fisheries and livelihoods.
Illegal and Punishable by Law
DA-BFAR Caraga reminds the public that harming or killing protected marine wildlife—sharks, manta rays, dolphins, whales, dugongs, and sea turtles—is strictly illegal under the Philippine Fisheries Code (RA 8550, as amended by RA 10654). Violators face massive penalties:
• Administrative fines of up to ₱5 million (or five times the species’ value)
• Imprisonment of 12 to 20 years if convicted in court
A Call for Awareness and Action
While investigations continue, DA-BFAR is urging local governments, fisherfolk, and coastal communities to help protect marine wildlife. The agency is doubling down on education campaigns, law enforcement, and partnerships to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
If you witness illegal fishing or marine wildlife killings, report them immediately. Protecting our oceans isn’t just an environmental issue—it’s a responsibility we all share. Let’s work together to keep our waters thriving for generations to come.
