Senior Citizens Party-list Rep. Rodolfo “Ompong” Ordanes is throwing his full support behind the Department of Energy’s proposal to remove the Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity, saying it’s a much-needed relief for millions of elderly Filipinos struggling with monthly bills.

“For many of us, electricity isn’t just a necessity — it’s a lifeline,” Ordanes said. “For senior citizens, access to power means comfort, safety, and dignity.”

He praised Energy Secretary Sharon Garin for taking a compassionate stand by pushing for the VAT removal, calling it a move that shows “heart for the people.”

“Many seniors still pay for electricity in their homes. That’s why we’re ready to work hand in hand with the DOE to make sure this proposal gets the attention it deserves,” the lawmaker added. “This measure will help ease their burden and ensure a better quality of life.”

Beyond scrapping VAT, Ordanes is also pushing to increase the senior citizen electricity discount from 5% to 15% through House Bill No. 434, covering those who consume up to 100 kWh per month.

The party-list also continues to recognize power companies that actively honor senior discounts, saying private firms and the government should work together to make life easier for the elderly.

Ordanes recently joined the One Meralco Foundation’s Household Electrification Program in Novaliches, Quezon City, where over 160 homes gained access to electricity for the first time.

“I saw the happiness on the faces of our lolos and lolas who can now live more comfortably,” he shared.

The congressman vowed to keep fighting for fair and inclusive access to electricity for all.
“As your voice in Congress, I will not stop pushing for decent, affordable, and accessible electricity — especially for our seniors,” Ordanes said.
