Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto Pushes For Long-Term Reforms After House Hearing
Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto took to social media to share his thoughts following his attendance at a House of Representatives hearing focused on alleged corruption within the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). While he was invited to the hearing, he said he wasn't sure what he could contribute, but felt it was important to go.
The mayor's post touched on a number of key points, including his hope that the committee would eventually shift its focus from investigations to long-term reforms to combat corruption. He suggested several specific changes, such as eliminating illegal subcontracting, implementing a full public disclosure policy for all DPWH documents, and improving coordination between the DPWH and local government units (LGUs).
Sotto's comments also delved into the complex nature of the issue. He noted that it's increasingly difficult to discern the truth due to powerful groups at play. He encouraged the public to listen closely to the testimonies of witnesses and to draw their own conclusions.
The mayor ended his post with a strong call to action, reminding everyone that they have a part to play in demanding a better government. He believes that a more informed and aware citizenry is the most important first step in reducing corruption. He noted how in 2016 and 2017, he used to tell young people about the widespread "SOP" or payoffs, and they seemed to disbelieve him. Now, he said, everyone knows and has seen it for themselves.
