President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has ordered the release of ₱298 million in financial assistance to local government units (LGUs) in the Davao and Caraga regions that were hit hard by the two strong earthquakes last October 10.

During his visit to the quake-affected towns of Manay and Tarragona in Davao Oriental on Monday, the President announced that funds from the Office of the President will be distributed to help speed up local recovery and rebuilding efforts.

The assistance includes ₱15 million to ₱50 million for nine provinces and ₱3 million to ₱15 million for 12 cities and municipalities.

“It’s up to the LGU kung paano ninyo gagamitin ito,” President Marcos said during a briefing outside the Tarragona Municipal Hall.

Drawing from his experience as a former governor of Ilocos Norte, Marcos explained why the national government is letting local leaders decide how to use the funds.

“The reason binibigay namin itong pondo sa inyo dahil as a former governor I know that lahat ng bawat lugar may kaibahan sa pangangailangan,” he said.

“And that’s why ang thinking namin, ibigay na lang namin sa inyo ang pondo. Alam ninyo, mas alam ninyo kaysa sa amin ang pangangailangan doon sa area ninyo.”

Among the biggest recipients is Davao Oriental, which will receive ₱50 million. The municipalities of Manay, Banaybanay, and Lupon will each get ₱15 million, while Mati City, Tarragona, Baganga, Boston, and Cateel will each receive ₱10 million. Smaller grants will go to Caraga (₱5 million), San Isidro (₱5 million), and Governor Generoso (₱3 million).

Meanwhile, Agusan del Sur will receive ₱20 million, while Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao Occidental, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Dinagat Islands, and Davao City will each get ₱15 million.

President Marcos added that other affected LGUs will also receive support as assessments continue.

He further announced that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) will release additional funds through the Local Government Support Fund (LGSF), while the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will use its Quick Response Fund to repair damaged infrastructure.

The President assured quake-hit communities that the government is working closely with local leaders to ensure aid reaches those who need it most—“para makabangon agad ang mga Pilipino sa Mindanao.”
