PCG Delivers Aid To Fishermen In Bajo De Masinloc; Extends Help To China Coast Guard After Collision

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) carried out a dual mission in Bajo de Masinloc today—providing much-needed assistance to Filipino fishermen while also stepping in to help foreign counterparts following a maritime mishap.

At the break of dawn, the BRP Teresa Magbanua, BRP Suluan, and MV Pamamalakaya set sail to launch the Kadiwa Para sa Bagong Bayaning Mangingisda (KBBM) program. Their goal: to deliver fuel subsidies and ice supplies to more than 30 Filipino fishing vessels operating in these contested waters. For generations, these fishermen have relied on the area to feed their families and sustain their communities, and the PCG’s support helps them continue their work despite growing challenges.

The day was far from calm. As PCG ships moved through the area, they faced aggressive maneuvers from other vessels, including a water cannon attempt on MRRV 4406—skillfully avoided thanks to the crew’s quick seamanship.

Tensions escalated when China Coast Guard vessel 3104, in high-speed pursuit of BRP Suluan, made a dangerous turn and collided with People’s Liberation Army Navy ship 164, roughly 10.5 nautical miles east of Bajo de Masinloc. The impact left the CCG vessel’s forecastle heavily damaged and the ship unseaworthy.

In a gesture of professionalism, the PCG immediately offered assistance—standing ready to help recover any man overboard and provide medical care to injured CCG personnel. At the same time, MRRV 9701 escorted the Filipino fishermen to safety, where they received the promised supplies and fuel.

Wrapping up the KBBM mission, the PCG reaffirmed its commitment to both protecting Filipino fishing livelihoods and upholding safety at sea for all mariners—friend or rival. It also reiterated its call for the Chinese government to observe international maritime rules and conduct itself with professionalism to prevent avoidable accidents.

The Department of National Defense echoed the PCG’s stand, condemning what it described as “atrocious and inane behavior” in the West Philippine Sea and underscoring that the Philippines will not be intimidated.
