Petro Gazz Bounces Back Big, Secures Last Quarterfinal Spot At AVC Women's Champions League

After a tough four-set loss to powerhouse Kaohsiung Taipower just the night before, Petro Gazz showed no signs of slowing down as they stormed past winless Hip Hing, 25-8, 25-12, 25-12, to punch the last ticket to the quarterfinals of the 2025 AVC Women’s Champions League on Tuesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.

The Angels, still stinging from their 15-25, 16-25, 25-19, 20-25 defeat on Monday, made sure to bounce back hard—and fast. And it worked. They now move on to a much bigger challenge: a knockout quarterfinal battle against Pool A’s top seed, Beijing Baic Motor, a team loaded with elite talent.

“This was a great game to find our rhythm as a team, to have fun, and enjoy each other’s play. We just decided to enjoy every point and not dwell on pressure,” said American import Gia Day, who led the charge with 18 points, eight digs, and three excellent receptions.

From the first serve, it was clear Petro Gazz was on a mission. Eight players chipped in points during the swift one-hour and 13-minute match. MJ Phillips tallied nine points, Brooke Van Sickle added eight, and veterans Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Remy Palma notched six apiece—with Palma firing three service aces for good measure.

Hip Hing, meanwhile, struggled mightily, managing just 12 points on attacks and heavily relying on Petro Gazz’s 19 unforced errors to get on the scoreboard. Their top scorers, Sze Man Kwan and Tsz Ching Lam, were limited to just three points each.

Now, with the pool phase behind them, all three Philippine clubs—Petro Gazz, Creamline, and PLDT—are gearing up for the real battle: the knockout quarterfinals. And it’s going to be a tough one.

PLDT will take on Kazakhstan’s Zhetysu at 4 p.m., followed by Petro Gazz’s clash with Chinese giant Beijing Baic Motor at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Then on Friday, Creamline goes head-to-head with Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima, while Taipower faces Vietnam’s VTV Binh Dien Long An.

It won’t be easy, but with home-court advantage, the cheers of the crowd, and that classic Filipino fighting spirit, the local teams are hoping to pull off some major upsets.
