The Philippines and Australia are keeping communication lines wide open as investigations continue into the deadly Bondi Beach shooting.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday that Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong agreed to “keep each other closely informed” of any developments related to the case during a phone call earlier in the day.
In a post on X, Lazaro stressed the Philippines’ solidarity with Australia in the wake of the tragedy, highlighting the strong partnership between the two countries, especially in security and law enforcement.
“The Philippines stands firmly in solidarity with Australia,” Lazaro said, adding that both nations remain united in efforts to protect communities from “intolerance, hatred, and violence.”
During the call, Lazaro also expressed her heartfelt condolences to the Australian people following the Bondi Beach incident.
Local media in Australia earlier reported that the suspected gunmen, identified as Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram, had traveled to the Philippines last month. Authorities, however, are still investigating the purpose of their visit and whether it has any direct link to the shooting.
When asked for more details about the conversation between the two top diplomats, DFA spokesperson Angelica Escalona reiterated that both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued security and law enforcement cooperation—and to keeping each other closely updated as the investigation moves forward.
For now, both governments say cooperation and constant coordination remain key as the probe continues.
