It was a night for the history books in Pasay City. The Philippine national men’s volleyball team, fueled by a passionate home crowd at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, secured their first-ever victory in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, defeating Egypt in a thrilling four-set match.

The win marked a massive milestone for the team, whose previous ranking of 88th in the world didn't deter them. The victory earned them a significant 18.14 ranking points, catapulting them to 77th place, while Egypt dropped from 21st to 22nd.

The match itself was a nail-biter, with the first two sets going down to the wire. The Philippines took the first set 29-27, and Egypt fought back to win the second 25-23. But the home team found their rhythm in the next two sets, controlling the flow of the game to close out the match 25-21 and 25-21.

The Philippines' success was a true team effort, but two players stood out. Team captain Bryan Bagunas was a force on the court, leading all scorers with an impressive 25 points, including 23 kills. Young opposite hitter Leo Ordiales, just 22 years old, also had a standout performance, contributing 21 points with a remarkable 61% attack success rate.

After the match, Ordiales spoke about the team’s determination following their loss to Tunisia. “We talked about our errors and practiced a lot, so now we played well,” he told VBTV, adding that the team was “super happy that so many fans support us.”

Now with all four teams in their pool tied with one win and one loss, the next matches will be a high-stakes affair. The Philippines will face Iran on Thursday in a must-win match for a chance to advance to the eighthfinals.
