Pope Francis Surprises Pilgrims With A Simple Message: 'Have A Good Sunday' In First Public Appearance Since Hospital Stay

Pope Francis made a surprise appearance at the end of the Mass for the Jubilee of the Sick and Healthcare Workers on Sunday, April 6—his first public outing since being discharged from the hospital two weeks ago.
The Pope, who wasn’t even scheduled for any official events that day, quietly made his way through the crowd in St. Peter’s Square and headed straight to the altar. The Mass had been celebrated by Archbishop Rino Fisichella, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelisation, and just as things were winding down, Pope Francis stepped up and greeted the gathered faithful.
With his signature humility, the Holy Father kept it short and sweet: “Have a good Sunday. Thank you all!!” That was it. Just a few words—but they meant everything to the thousands in attendance.
Wearing nasal cannulas to assist his breathing (as he did when he left Gemelli Hospital on March 23), the Pope looked physically fragile but spiritually strong. The crowd erupted in applause and joyful cries of “Viva il Papa!”—a spontaneous outpouring of love that filled the square.
Before that brief address, the Pope had quietly participated in the Jubilee activities: he received the Sacrament of Reconciliation, prayed inside St. Peter’s Basilica, and passed through the Holy Door—completing the steps needed to obtain a plenary indulgence, just like the other pilgrims gathered for the occasion.
According to the Vatican’s latest update from April 4, Pope Francis’ health is improving, and his spirits are high. Sunday’s short but meaningful appearance was a living testament to that—and a reminder of his deep connection with the faithful, even in times of physical weakness.
And with that, the Pope returned to his residence at Casa Santa Marta. A brief visit, a few kind words, and a whole lot of hope.
