Powering The Vote: Meralco All Set For A Smooth And Bright 2025 Midterm Election

As the country gears up for the 2025 midterm elections on May 12, Meralco is already one step ahead—literally powering up for the big day.
The country’s largest electric distribution utility, led by Manuel V. Pangilinan, is making sure that when Filipinos cast their votes, the lights stay on and the machines keep running. With over 3,000 polling precincts, canvassing centers, and other vital election sites within its franchise area, Meralco says it’s going full alert mode to ensure stable and reliable electricity service throughout the election period.
“No major problems in past elections, and we plan to keep it that way,” said Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe Zaldarriaga. “We’ve deployed contingency plans, and our crews will be strategically positioned so they can respond quickly to any issues—24/7.”
To back up that readiness, Meralco is mobilizing more than 160 generator sets and 470 floodlights to key locations, just in case backup power is needed.
Zaldarriaga also reminded the public of a few simple but important things: steer clear of flying kites near power lines (yes, really), and for those stationed at voting sites, resist the urge to plug in extra appliances like rice cookers or electric fans, which can cause overloads and affect the power supply.
Meralco has been coordinating with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the Department of Energy (DOE), and other energy players since last year. Part of the prep includes inspecting schools that will serve as polling precincts and carrying out maintenance and upgrades to the power network.
