President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos will personally attend the funeral of Pope Francis, according to Malacañang.

Palace Press Officer and Undersecretary Claire Castro confirmed the news today, sharing that preparations are already underway for the President and the First Lady’s trip to the Vatican.

“The President and the First Lady will be representing the Filipino people in paying their last respects to the Holy Father,” Usec. Castro said in a short statement to reporters.

While details about the trip are still being finalized, the Palace emphasized that the decision to attend was made swiftly, given the strong ties between the predominantly Catholic Philippines and the Vatican.

Pope Francis, beloved across the globe for his humility and compassion, passed away after more than a decade of serving as the head of the Catholic Church. His leadership and deep concern for the poor and marginalized resonated deeply with many Filipinos.

President Marcos, in an earlier message, described Pope Francis as a “beacon of hope and compassion” whose legacy will continue to inspire people of all faiths around the world.

Many Filipinos are expected to tune in to the funeral ceremonies, remembering the Pope’s historic visit to the Philippines in 2015 — a moment that touched millions of hearts.

We’ll bring more updates once the full schedule for President Marcos and the First Lady is officially released.
