President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and newly sworn-in German Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke by phone on Thursday, reaffirming the strong ties between the Philippines and Germany and exploring ways to deepen cooperation in key areas.
In a statement following the call, President Marcos described the exchange as “a good conversation,” highlighting shared priorities such as boosting defense collaboration, expanding economic partnerships, and working together on regional and global challenges.
“We talked about strengthening our defense and economic cooperation, working together on regional issues, and creating more opportunities for our people,” the President said.
The discussion also touched on future engagement, with President Marcos expressing appreciation for Chancellor Merz’s invitation to visit Germany again. Their dialogue comes just months after Marcos’ official visit to Berlin in March 2024, which marked the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Chancellor Merz officially took office on May 6, 2025, succeeding Olaf Scholz, who had invited President Marcos for his March visit. Both leaders appear eager to build on that momentum and usher in a new chapter of bilateral cooperation.
The call signals a shared commitment to strengthening longstanding ties and exploring practical areas of partnership, particularly in a shifting geopolitical landscape where collaboration between like-minded nations has become increasingly vital.
