During his official visit to Japan, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. met with top executives of Tsuneishi Holdings Corporation to reaffirm the strong and growing strategic partnership between the Philippines and Japan, particularly in the areas of sustainable shipbuilding and industrial development.
A highlight of the meeting was the recent construction of the world’s first Methanol Dual-Fuelled KAMSARMAX Bulk Carrier at Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu), Inc. President Marcos commended the project as a “technological breakthrough” and emphasized its importance not just for the Philippine shipbuilding industry, but for the region’s push toward greener and smarter maritime solutions.
“This vessel represents more than just innovation in shipping—it is a symbol of what the Philippines and Japan can achieve together,” President Marcos said. “It underscores our shared commitment to clean energy, modern manufacturing, and long-term cooperation.”
The initiative marks a significant step forward for the Philippines as it positions itself as a key player in sustainable maritime technology. Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu), a joint venture between Filipino and Japanese partners, has long been a model of successful industrial collaboration. The development of the methanol dual-fuelled vessel signals not only environmental progress but also new opportunities for skilled Filipino workers and engineers in the global shipbuilding arena.
As global demand grows for cleaner, more efficient transport systems, President Marcos expressed confidence that partnerships like this will drive innovation, create jobs, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from both parties to further deepen cooperation in industrial advancement and environmental responsibility—key pillars in the evolving relationship between the Philippines and Japan.
