President Marcos Inspects Major Drainage Project In Marikina

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. personally checked on the progress of the new drainage system along Sumulong Highway in Marikina City on August 11, 2025, underscoring the administration’s push to address long-standing flood problems in the area.
At the heart of the project is the installation of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) culvert pipes, designed to channel excess stormwater directly into the Marikina River. This upgrade aims to replace the existing two-barrel box culvert, which has long been inadequate during heavy rains and extreme typhoons—often resulting in flooding in nearby communities.
The drainage system covers a catchment area of 8.82 square kilometers, providing flood relief for several barangays in Marikina. By diverting rainwater straight to the river, it is expected to significantly reduce the risk of prolonged inundation in vulnerable neighborhoods.
Construction begins at the Marikina River outfall below Marikina Bridge and follows Sumulong Highway from J.P. Rizal Street up to Balante Creek, the boundary between Marikina City and Rizal Province.
President Marcos’ inspection highlighted the importance of speeding up critical infrastructure works, particularly those that safeguard communities against the impacts of severe weather. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader flood control efforts in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
