President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered all emergency agencies into full alert after a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Oriental early Friday morning, prompting PHIVOLCS to issue a tsunami warning for parts of Mindanao and Visayas.
The tremor hit at 9:43 a.m., shaking several coastal provinces including Davao Oriental, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Southern Leyte, and Eastern Samar.
“We’re now assessing the situation on the ground and ensuring that everyone is safe,” the President said, directing the NDRRMC, OCD, Armed Forces, and Coast Guard to carry out immediate evacuations, open emergency communication lines, and coordinate with local governments.
Marcos assured that search, rescue, and relief operations are underway. The DSWD has already pre-positioned food and non-food aid, while the Department of Health is on standby to provide emergency medical assistance.
“To our kababayans in the affected areas — please stay alert and calm. Move to higher ground and keep away from the shore until authorities say it’s safe,” the President emphasized. “Your safety is our top priority.”
The President also called on Filipinos to stay united during the crisis:
“We are working round the clock to ensure that help reaches everyone who needs it. Let’s continue to look out for one another and pray for the safety of all our countrymen.”
