President Donald J. Trump signaled a potential turning point in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, announcing that he has initiated arrangements for direct talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In a statement following high-level meetings at the White House with European leaders and NATO officials, Trump said, “Everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE for Russia/Ukraine. At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy.”
The discussions, which included French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and other European leaders, centered on security guarantees for Ukraine and steps to create conditions for peace. Trump emphasized that the proposed “Trilat”—a meeting involving himself, Putin, and Zelenskyy—would serve as a critical early step in breaking the deadlock of a war now nearing its fourth year.
The White House underscored the significance of the move by releasing a photo of President Trump on the phone with Putin from the Oval Office, reinforcing the message that peace efforts are underway at the highest level.
Trump also confirmed that senior U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, are actively working with Kyiv and Moscow to facilitate the next phase of negotiations.
While much remains uncertain, the President framed the development as a rare moment of optimism: “This was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years.”
The coming weeks may reveal whether these diplomatic efforts can translate into a breakthrough—one that could bring the long-sought possibility of peace closer to reality.
