PILIPINAS REPRESENT, indeed!

It was a proud moment for Philippine basketball fans as two rising stars made waves in Korea’s top hoops league. At the 2024–2025 Korean Basketball League (KBL) Awards, JD Cagulangan of the Suwon KT Sonicboom brought home the Rookie of the Year award—becoming one of the few Filipinos to earn such a recognition on foreign hardwood!

Cagulangan’s debut season was nothing short of impressive. With averages of 7.3 points, 4.3 assists, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.5 steals, JD quickly made his mark since joining the team back in January. His quick first step, court vision, and gritty defense made him a fan favorite and a nightmare for opposing guards. From quick hits to smooth digs through the defense—he showed he belongs in the big leagues.

But the Pinoy pride didn’t stop there.

Carl Tamayo, suiting up for the Changwon LG Sakers, also turned heads by being named to the KBL Best 5 (also known as the Mythical Five). The towering forward averaged 15.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists, helping his team finish second in the standings with a 34-20 record. Talk about stepping up!

Joining Tamayo on the Best 5 list were Seoul SK’s Jamil Wani, Ahn Youngjoon, Kim Sun-hyung, and Changwon LG’s Ahn Murray—big names, big talent, and yes, our very own Carl standing tall among them.

From UAAP highlights to KBL stardom, JD and Carl are showing the world what Filipino hoopers are made of. And if this season is any indication, we’re just getting started.
