In a rare and remarkable gesture, San Miguel Corporation (SMC) president and CEO Ramon Ang has offered to take on one of Metro Manila’s most persistent problems—flooding—without asking for a single peso from either the public or the government.
“Ngayon, ako po, San Miguel Ramon Ang, nagbo-volunteer ako ngayon. Ako lang tutulong sa buong Metro Manila ng baha. At no cost to the people, at no cost to the government,” Ang declared. He even went beyond flood control, pledging to build schools and housing on purchased land, should the need arise.
The announcement came during a meeting on Friday, August 8, at the SMC headquarters in Pasig City. The discussion brought together key figures: Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairperson Romando “Don” Artes, and several Metro Manila mayors including Manila’s Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, Valenzuela’s Wes Gatchalian, Las Piñas’ April Aguilar, and Muntinlupa’s Ruffy Biazon.
Ang’s proposal is not just about engineering works or infrastructure—it’s a statement of personal commitment. By taking financial responsibility off the government’s shoulders, he offers a potential fast-track to long-delayed flood control projects, a move that could drastically improve the lives of millions in the capital region.
Flooding has long been a stubborn challenge for Metro Manila, with clogged waterways, rapid urbanization, and outdated drainage systems exacerbating the problem. If Ang’s volunteer initiative moves forward, it could mark a turning point—one where private sector leadership helps fill gaps in public capacity.
Whether this unprecedented offer will translate into action now depends on the collaboration between the SMC chief, local government units, and national agencies. But one thing is clear: Ramon Ang has put a bold, no-strings-attached solution on the table.
