Remulla Wanted Action, But Villanueva's Already Cleared - Official Records Show
Senate FILE
Just hours after Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said he would ask the Senate to enforce a 2016 dismissal order against Senator Joel Villanueva, official documents have surfaced showing the senator has already been cleared of any pending cases.

Two separate certifications — one from the Office of the Ombudsman and another from the Sandiganbayan — both dated September 10, 2025, confirm that Villanueva has no pending criminal or administrative cases and is not an accused in any court proceedings.

The Ombudsman clearance stated that as of September 9, 2025, Villanueva had a completely clean record. The Sandiganbayan certification, meanwhile, affirmed that the senator “is not a defendant in any case filed in this Court.”

These documents directly contrast Remulla’s earlier remarks that he would personally deliver a letter to Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III urging the enforcement of the nearly decade-old dismissal order tied to Villanueva’s past stint at TESDA.

Villanueva’s camp has yet to issue an official statement, but the clearances appear to close the door on any remaining legal questions about the 2016 case.
