Leyte Representative Richard Gomez has publicly apologized to journalists after drawing flak for posting their names and contact information on his Facebook page. The incident stemmed from reporters reaching out to him for his response to allegations linking him to a faulty flood control project in Matag-ob town.

In a statement, Gomez admitted his lapse in judgment and expressed regret over the move. “To the members of the press who took offense in my social media post, I sincerely apologize. Sensitive information has been removed. I understand that the media endeavored to get my side of the story. I acknowledge your efforts. I’m sorry and I could have handled it better,” he said.

The controversy began after Matag-ob Mayor Bernie Tacoy associated Gomez with a flood control project that was allegedly substandard. The lawmaker, in response, accused some members of the media of taking part in what he described as a “paid spin” aimed at discrediting him.

However, his online post—which displayed the personal details of journalists who were simply reaching out for his side—was met with sharp criticism. He has since deleted the photos.

The issue has caught the attention of Congress as well. Deputy Speaker Ronnie Puno earlier noted that Gomez’s accusation against journalists might be raised before the House ethics committee.

Gomez’s apology comes as both the lawmaker and the press navigate the tense aftermath of the exchange, underscoring the delicate balance between defending oneself and respecting the work of the media.
