The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) recovered a large piece of rocket debris marked with the flag of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) along the shores of Sitio Gunting, Barangay Bonbon, Looc, Occidental Mindoro, on August 14, 2025.
The unusual find began at around 12:30 p.m., when the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Lubang received a report from the Philippine National Police-Maritime Group about a local fisherman who had pulled in floating debris believed to be linked to China’s Long March 7A rocket launch held between July 15 and 17 this year.
Responding swiftly, CGSS Lubang coordinated with Barangay Binacas officials and the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) Lubang Sub-Office to conduct a retrieval operation. The team confirmed the debris sighting and spoke with the fisherman, a 50-year-old resident of Barangay Binacas, who found the object roughly one nautical mile off Barangay Bonbon while fishing.
The debris—measuring about 10 feet wide and 14 feet long—was made of alloy material and clearly displayed the PRC flag. By 2:40 p.m., the joint PCG-PDRRMO team had secured the object at Sitio Balaguin, Barangay Maliig, Lubang, for safekeeping and eventual turnover to the proper authorities.
The PCG is once again reminding fishermen, coastal residents, and other maritime stakeholders to report any unusual floating objects to the nearest Coast Guard unit to ensure safe and proper handling.
