In a strong reaffirmation of unity and confidence within the House of Representatives, Leyte 1st District Representative Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez was reelected unopposed as Speaker of the House on Monday, marking the beginning of his second consecutive term at the helm of the chamber.
The vote, held during the opening session of the 20th Congress, saw Romualdez secure 269 votes—an overwhelming show of support from the House’s supermajority coalition and a rare repeat of his first unchallenged election in the previous Congress.
Administered by Bulacan Rep. Salvador “Doy” Pleyto Sr., Romualdez took his oath of office in the presence of his family, including his wife, Tingog Party-list Rep. Yedda K. Romualdez.
The formal nomination came from Quezon 2nd District Rep. David “Jay-jay” Suarez, who praised Romualdez’s leadership during the 19th Congress as “transformative,” highlighting his ability to unify lawmakers, respond to public needs, and steer the chamber with integrity and purpose.
“Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez is not only a public servant of experience and stature—he is a unifier, a reformer, and a partner in nation-building,” Suarez said. “He has already shown us what dignified, decisive, and compassionate leadership looks like.”
Romualdez’s nomination was swiftly seconded by key congressional figures, representing a cross-section of major political parties. Among them were Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand Alexander Marcos (Partido Federal ng Pilipinas), Quezon 1st District Rep. Mark Enverga (NPC), Antipolo Rep. Ronaldo V. Puno (NUP), and Misamis Oriental Rep. Yevgeny Vincente Emano (Nacionalista Party). Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. leader Rep. Raymond Democrito Mendoza (TUCP) also expressed full support, ensuring backing from the party-list bloc.
Romualdez’s continued speakership signals a continuity of leadership that, according to many House members, helped deliver one of the most productive legislative terms in recent memory. Under his guidance, the 19th Congress passed 61 of the 64 priority bills identified by the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC), aligning closely with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s Bagong Pilipinas agenda.
Public trust in both the Speaker and the institution has also improved significantly. The latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) surveys showed Romualdez’s trust rating rising from 26% to 34%, while trust in the House of Representatives climbed from 34% in April to 57% in June.
According to Suarez, these numbers reflect more than just political popularity—they are the result of leadership grounded in action and service. “Speaker Romualdez leads with strategic foresight, empathy, and calm resolve. He listens more than he speaks, delivers more than he promises, and unites more than he divides.”
As the 20th Congress begins its work, lawmakers signaled that their renewed confidence in Romualdez is rooted not only in past performance but also in a shared belief that his leadership will continue to steer the House with purpose, productivity, and a focus on national interest.
