Romualdez On PBBM Impeachment Buzz: Congress Is On Break - Not Much Can Happen Right Now

Speaker Martin Romualdez has spoken up about the buzz surrounding an alleged impeachment complaint filed against President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.—and his message was pretty straightforward: “Nothing much can be done, Congress is on recess.”
In a quick chat with reporters after a unity rally in Region 8 hosted by Tingog Party-list and Lakas-CMD, Romualdez explained that the House of Representatives simply can’t move forward with any official actions while they’re not in session.
“Well, wala pa tayo, we’re not in session right now. So, not much can be done, ‘di ba?” Romualdez said, keeping things casual but clear. He added that even the House Secretary General, Reginald “Reggie” Velasco, wasn’t around to receive the complaint since he was attending a seminar at the time.
“Even the Sec-Gen is at a seminar. So, we may have to wait for the proper time to consider that,” added the Speaker, who also happens to be a lawyer and president of the Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa).
As for the timing of the complaint? Romualdez didn’t want to speculate. “I don’t know what inspired them. But hayaan mo na lang sila,” he said.
To recap, the impeachment complaint reportedly comes from the Duterte Youth party-list, and it accuses the President of constitutional violations and betrayal of public trust—largely tied to issues surrounding former President Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest and possible detention by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
But not everyone is buying into it.
Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre was quick to call the move politically motivated. “May dalawang linggo na lang pagkabalik namin ng session, hindi ko alam kung may saktong oras pa,” Acidre said, questioning both the timing and viability of the complaint.
He also pointed out that it was filed just four days before the elections, raising even more eyebrows. “Hindi po kandidato ang ating Presidente. Bakit kailangang gawin po ito sa kanya?” he asked.
So for now, with Congress on break and many questions hanging in the air, it looks like any real movement on the issue will have to wait—if it even picks up steam at all.
