Romualdez Reportedly Lobbying For Sotto As Senate President Ahead Of Congress Resumption
File
As the 20th Congress resumes session on Monday, changes in leadership are anticipated in both chambers of the Philippine legislature.

In the Senate, Senator Chiz Escudero is poised to reclaim the Senate presidency, with 18 senators reportedly signing a resolution backing his leadership.

Over at the House of Representatives, Speaker Martin Romualdez is expected to retain his post, with his office releasing statements claiming the support of 291 lawmakers.

However, behind the scenes, sources say Romualdez has been lobbying for a different outcome in the Senate. He allegedly reached out personally to Senators Raffy and Erwin Tulfo to urge them to support former Senate President Tito Sotto for the top Senate post, instead of Escudero. The same sources claim that Romualdez invoked the name of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., suggesting the President was backing the move.

The Tulfo brothers had earlier voiced their support for Escudero’s leadership. Senator JV Ejercito, another supporter of Escudero, was also reportedly approached by Romualdez in a similar attempt to sway his vote toward Sotto.

These developments unfold amid the Supreme Court’s recent dismissal of an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, which originated from the House. Some political observers view the push for Sotto as part of a broader maneuver to sideline Duterte, with Sotto seen as a crucial Romualdez ally in the Senate.
