In a major move set to accelerate the development of artificial intelligence globally, Samsung and OpenAI have announced a strategic partnership spanning the technology, construction, and heavy industries sectors. The expansive collaboration, formalized via a Letter of Intent (LOI), brings together several powerful Samsung entities-Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T, and Samsung Heavy Industries-to advance AI data center infrastructure and future technologies.

The partnership leverages Samsung's collective strengths across semiconductors, cloud services, shipbuilding, and maritime technologies, marking a significant commitment to strengthening the foundation of global AI.

Powering the Stargate Initiative

At the core of the agreement, Samsung Electronics will serve as a strategic memory partner for OpenAI’s massive global Stargate initiative. With OpenAI's memory demand projected to reach up to an estimated 900,000 DRAM wafers per month, Samsung will meet this critical need by supplying its extensive portfolio of high-performance, energy-efficient DRAM solutions.

As a comprehensive semiconductor provider, Samsung will offer differentiated capabilities in advanced chip packaging and heterogeneous integration between memory and system semiconductors, supporting the entire AI workflow from training to inference.

Building Data Centers on Land and Sea

The collaboration extends to the physical infrastructure required to house these next-generation AI systems:

Samsung SDS will partner with OpenAI to jointly develop and operate the Stargate AI data centers. Leveraging its deep expertise in advanced data center technologies, SDS will collaborate on design, development, and operation. Furthermore, SDS is positioned to offer consulting, deployment, and management services to businesses looking to integrate OpenAI’s AI models, and has signed a reseller partnership for OpenAI’s services, specifically supporting the adoption of ChatGPT Enterprise for local companies in Korea.

In a highly innovative effort, Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries will collaborate with OpenAI on the joint development of floating data centers. This approach aims to address challenges like land scarcity, high cooling costs, and carbon emissions. The two companies will leverage their proprietary technologies to explore further projects in floating power plants and control centers, in addition to the maritime data center infrastructure.

Starting with this landmark alliance, Samsung aims to fully support Korea's national goals of becoming a top-tier nation in AI and facilitating the adoption of technologies like ChatGPT across its own workforce to spur internal AI transformation.
