Savannah Davison's Record Night Falls Short As PLDT's Playoff Run Ends In Heartbreaker

Savannah Davison played like a woman on fire. But even her record-breaking night wasn’t enough to keep PLDT’s championship dreams alive.
The Fil-Canadian spiker erupted for a jaw-dropping 34 points, putting on a show for the High Speed Hitters. But when the game was on the line, late miscues proved costly, and PLDT fell in a heartbreaking five-set thriller—25-15, 12-25, 25-23, 21-25, 15-13—to Choco Mucho in Game 2 of the 2024-25 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference quarterfinals.
Coming Out Swinging
Needing a win to force a deciding Game 3, Davison wasted no time setting the tone. She came out firing in the fifth set, scoring all of PLDT’s first five points to give her squad a 5-1 lead. For a moment, it looked like the High Speed Hitters were in control.
But momentum can be fickle. Just when it seemed like Davison would carry PLDT to victory, the tides turned. A flurry of attack errors—three in a crucial stretch—allowed Choco Mucho to snatch the lead with an 8-1 run, flipping a 6-5 deficit into a 9-6 advantage.
Davison did everything in her power to rally PLDT, adding more points down the stretch. But Choco Mucho had its own heroes. Sisi Rondina and Mars Alba came up clutch, sealing the Flying Titans’ ticket to the semifinals and ending PLDT’s season in the process.
“No Words”
After the dust settled, Davison was left replaying those late-game mistakes in her mind.
“Actually, my mind goes to the errors I had,” she admitted. “The three, four errors I had in the fifth set. It’s hard kasi you want to win so bad but you have to keep it on the court.”
She also acknowledged the uphill battle against a stacked Choco Mucho squad led by former MVP Rondina.
“Parang no words. It was a long [conference], and we just got, I guess, the tougher bracket. But we’re not here to complain, we’re here to play. Yun lang. It boils down to the last couple of points, and they just weren’t in our favor.”
A Season to Be Proud Of
Despite the painful exit, PLDT’s campaign was nothing short of impressive. The High Speed Hitters wrapped up the preliminary round with an 8-3 record, claimed the fourth seed, and battled past ZUS Coffee to set up the clash with Choco Mucho.
Davison, while disappointed, took pride in what the team accomplished.
“I guess it’s a team sport. It takes a village—coaches, management—to really pull through. It just goes to show that regardless of one person, you need everybody,” she reflected. “We played really well today, but like I said, it didn’t swing in our favor.”
On to the Next Battle
Physically drained but still standing, Davison admitted the past few days had been grueling.
“It was actually really heavy, but mind over matter. I didn’t want to say that out loud before the game,” she shared. “In just a couple of days, four days, it’s a lot pero it’s not a lot at the same time.”
But there’s no time to dwell on the loss. PLDT now shifts its focus to an even bigger stage—the 2025 AVC Champions League. Set to represent the Philippines alongside Creamline and Petro Gazz, the High Speed Hitters will soon test themselves against international competition.
“It helps because now we get to look forward to something else,” Davison said. “It’s a very big tournament. It’s international. It gives us an opportunity to show our talents on a different platform, and that’s a really good experience to look forward to.”
The All-Filipino Conference may be over, but for Davison and PLDT, the battle is far from done. The next challenge is on the horizon, and they’re ready to take it head-on.
