Senate Votes To Archive Impeachment Complaint Against VP Sara Duterte

In a vote that drew national attention, the Senate decided on Tuesday to archive the articles of impeachment filed against Vice President Sara Duterte. With 19 senators voting in favor, 4 opposing, and 1 abstaining, the senate effectively put the impeachment proceedings on hold indefinitely.

The decision to archive means the complaint will not move forward to trial unless revived by a future Senate action. While this does not completely dismiss the charges, it puts the process in legislative limbo—neither progressing nor concluding it.

The move comes amid divided public opinion and ongoing political discourse surrounding the Vice President’s performance and responsibilities. Supporters of the motion emphasized the need to focus on national priorities rather than prolonged political conflict, while critics voiced concern that the decision may weaken the system of accountability for high-ranking officials.

The lone abstention reflected some senators’ hesitations, with at least one expressing that while they were not convinced of the charges, they believed a full hearing would have allowed for a more transparent resolution.

As of now, the Vice President’s office has yet to issue an official statement following the Senate vote. Meanwhile, observers are closely watching whether the House of Representatives or civil society groups will take further action—or if this marks the quiet end of a highly publicized issue.
