Senator Bong Go has expressed deep sorrow over the heartbreaking accident that took place at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 last Sunday, May 4, which claimed two lives — including a 5-year-old girl.
The incident happened around 8 a.m. when a black SUV, after dropping off a passenger, suddenly surged forward and plowed into a group of people near the terminal entrance. The driver later told authorities that he got distracted by another car and forgot to hit the brakes. The crash took the lives of a young girl and a 28-year-old man — a tragedy that’s left many mourning.
One of the victims was the daughter of an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who was supposed to fly to Europe that same day. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has since stepped in to help, not just emotionally, but also by assisting the grieving OFW in explaining his absence to his employer abroad.
Senator Go, who co-authored the law that created the DMW, was quick to commend the agency for its swift response. But beyond that, he also emphasized the need for accountability and action.
“I extend my deepest sympathies to the families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident,” Go said. “It’s a painful reminder of how important it is to always stay alert when behind the wheel, especially in crowded public spaces like our airports.”
He stressed the importance of a thorough investigation, urging authorities to look into what went wrong and what can be done to prevent similar incidents in the future. “This isn’t just about one driver — it’s about making sure our public spaces, especially high-traffic areas like NAIA, are safe for everyone.”
Go also pointed out the bigger picture: the need for stronger road safety measures, stricter driver discipline, and better enforcement. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.
Meanwhile, the airport’s private operator, New NAIA Infrastructure Corporation, has promised to fully support the victims’ families, including shouldering all related hospital and medical expenses.
Senator Go wrapped up his statement by pledging to continue working with government agencies to make public infrastructure safer and to protect the welfare of every Filipino.
“At the end of the day, nothing is more important than the safety and lives of our fellow Filipinos,” he said.
