Senator Loren Legarda has expressed strong condemnation over the theft and desecration of the bust of Dr. Jose Rizal at Place Jose Rizal in Paris’ 9th arrondissement — a spot that honors the Philippines’ national hero in the heart of France.

Legarda said she was “deeply saddened and angered” by the incident, calling it an affront to Filipino heritage and the enduring legacy of Rizal, whose ideals of freedom and reform continue to inspire people around the world.

“Rizal is not only a Filipino hero but a figure deeply respected by the French,” Legarda said, noting that France is where Rizal once studied and completed his iconic novel El Filibusterismo.

The senator commended the Philippine Embassy in Paris for swiftly reporting the incident to French authorities, who are now working to locate and recover the missing bust.

“I call on local authorities and the global Filipino community to help ensure that Rizal’s bust is returned to its rightful place — and that his memory and values continue to be honored and protected,” Legarda said.

The bronze bust, which symbolizes the shared history between the Philippines and France, was installed to celebrate Rizal’s intellectual journey and the international reach of his ideals.
