The Department of Tourism (DOT) is throwing its support behind the vital role of the ocean in the nation’s progress, with Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco joining industry and government leaders at the Blue Economy Annual Trade & Conference 2025 (BEACON EXPO) opening in Pasay City.
Secretary Frasco, who was the Guest of Honor, led the ceremonial ribbon-cutting Monday, September 29, at the SMX Convention Center, alongside a host of high-profile figures. These included Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac, Presidential Assistant for Maritime Concerns Secretary Andres Centino, Pasay City Mayor Emi Calixto-Rubiano, and Greek Ambassador H.E. Ioannis Pediotis, among others.
In her address, the Tourism Chief underscored the Philippines' intrinsic link to the sea, emphasizing that this rich maritime heritage must translate into concrete opportunities for livelihoods, national pride, and economic growth.
"Our waters not only hold beauty, but also immense responsibility upon all of us," Secretary Frasco noted, highlighting the Philippines’ status as a mega-biodiverse country. She stressed that protecting these marine resources is "not only an environmental duty, but an economic imperative," as they are the very foundation for both tourism and the country's maritime future.
The Secretary issued a call to action for all stakeholders, urging them to collaborate on safeguarding marine resources, boosting cruise and dive tourism, upgrading ports, and ensuring the maritime and tourism sectors advance in lockstep.
"Each ship that docks not only brings in tourists, it brings livelihood, investment, and pride to coastal communities," she stated. Secretary Frasco also paid tribute to Filipino seafarers and cruise workers, praising their skill, discipline, and warmth as among the nation’s greatest assets and the backbone of the maritime economy. "When the world sails, it sails with the strength of Filipino hands and the hospitality of the Filipino heart,” she proudly added.
The three-day BEACON EXPO 2025, which runs from September 29 to October 1, is focused on the theme, "Protecting the Ocean: A Catalyst for a Sustainable Blue Economy." The event aims to be a premier platform for innovation and collaboration across the maritime sector, covering everything from shipbuilding to renewable energy and naval defense. The conference is running parallel with the Marino World Manning Expo & Conference and the 4-day BIAP In-Water Boat Show at the Manila Yacht Club.
