The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has confirmed that Severe Tropical Storm “PODUL” has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and has been given the local name “GORIO.”
As of 8:00 AM today, August 11, 2025, “GORIO” is located approximately 1,305 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon (21.1°N, 134.4°E). The storm packs maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h near its center, with gusts reaching up to 135 km/h. It is moving westward at a speed of 25 km/h.
At present, no Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS) are raised anywhere in the country. PAGASA notes that “GORIO” is unlikely to directly affect Philippine land areas within the next three days. However, if the storm shifts further south, TCWS No. 1 may be hoisted over Extreme Northern Luzon as a precaution.
While “GORIO” is still far from the mainland, its wide wind circulation extends up to 280 kilometers from the center. Coastal waters off Extreme Northern Luzon may experience moderate seas, with wave heights between 1.0 and 1.5 meters. Mariners of small vessels are strongly advised to avoid sailing in these conditions, particularly if they are inexperienced or lack proper equipment.
According to PAGASA’s forecast, “GORIO” will likely continue on a westward path in the next 24 hours before veering west-northwest tomorrow afternoon, August 12. The storm is projected to make landfall over the northeastern coast of Taiwan by Wednesday, August 13, before exiting PAR later that day or by early Thursday morning. It may briefly intensify into a typhoon within the next 12 hours before gradually weakening.
PAGASA reiterates its call for the public, especially those in northern provinces and seafarers, to remain vigilant and monitor official weather updates.
