The Philippine weather bureau PAGASA has raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over several provinces in the eastern part of the country as Severe Tropical Storm Uwan (international name: Fung-Wong) continues to move closer to the Philippines.

In its 5:00 PM bulletin on Friday, November 7, PAGASA said Uwan was located 1,175 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, packing maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 135 kph. The storm is moving westward at 25 kph.

Within the next 36 hours, areas under Signal No. 1 are expected to experience strong winds and occasional rain showers, while the rest of Luzon should prepare for heavy rainfall starting Sunday, November 9, until Monday, November 10.

Areas Under Signal No. 1

PAGASA said Signal No. 1 is now in effect over:

Luzon: Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, eastern and southeastern Quezon (including Tagkawayan, Lopez, and Mulanay), and parts of Romblon.

Visayas: Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, northern and central Cebu (including Bantayan and Camotes Islands), northeastern Bohol, and northern Negros Occidental.

Mindanao: Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte.

PAGASA warned that “minimal to minor impacts from strong winds are possible” in these areas, especially in coastal and mountainous zones.

Possible Landfall and Intensity

Uwan is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) late Friday or early Saturday morning. The weather bureau said the system may rapidly intensify into a typhoon within 24 hours and could reach super typhoon category by Sunday morning.

Current forecasts show that Uwan may make landfall over southern Isabela or northern Aurora late Sunday evening or early Monday morning, before crossing Northern Luzon and exiting to the West Philippine Sea.

Flood and Storm Surge Threats

PAGASA also cautioned residents in Northern and Central Luzon’s coastal areas to prepare for possible storm surges and flooding. “Heavy rainfall, severe winds, and storm surge may still be experienced in localities outside the landfall point,” the agency said.

Sea Travel Warning

Mariners are strongly advised not to venture out to sea, as very rough to high seas are expected across the eastern seaboards of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, with waves reaching up to 5 meters.

PAGASA urged the public and local disaster response offices to take all necessary precautions and closely monitor updates. The next tropical cyclone bulletin will be issued at 11:00 PM tonight.
