The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has confirmed that officials from the Philippine Embassy in The Hague recently visited former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC) Detention Center.

The DFA stated that the visit was a routine "welfare check," carried out in accordance with its duties under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and relevant Philippine laws to ensure the protection and well-being of all Filipino citizens abroad.

In a statement, the DFA emphasized this is a standard procedure for all Philippine Foreign Service Posts: "This is a duty of all Philippine Foreign Service Posts and is no different from what the DFA does for other Filipino citizens who are in detention abroad."

The visit comes as the former President is being held at the ICC facility in the Netherlands in connection with charges of crimes against humanity. The DFA's confirmation follows public discussion regarding the nature of the consular visit.
