Severe Tropical Storm Opong (#Bualoi) is now pounding the Mindoro Strait, packing maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h and gusts of up to 150 km/h. Moving west-northwest at 35 km/h, the storm continues to bring widespread rains, fierce winds, and dangerous seas across Luzon and parts of the Visayas.

At 4:00 PM, PAGASA tracked Opong’s center over the coastal waters of Santa Cruz, Occidental Mindoro (13.0°N, 120.3°E). Forecasters warn that Opong could re-intensify into a typhoon within the next 12 hours as it barrels toward the West Philippine Sea.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals in Effect

• Signal No. 3 (storm-force winds, 89–117 km/h): Occidental Mindoro and the Calamian Islands.

• Signal No. 2 (gale-force winds, 62–88 km/h): Southern Cavite, Batangas, Marinduque, Oriental Mindoro, parts of Romblon, Cuyo Islands, northern Palawan, and Caluya Islands.

• Signal No. 1 (strong winds, 39–61 km/h): Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Quezon, Bicol Region, northern Palawan, parts of Visayas, and several other provinces.

Heavy Rains and Strong Winds

PAGASA warns of heavy rainfall, severe winds, and storm surges up to 3.0 meters, especially in low-lying and coastal areas of Metro Manila, CALABARZON, Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Masbate, Aklan, and Antique.

The Southwest Monsoon, enhanced by Opong, will also whip up gale-force gusts across Luzon, Visayas, and parts of Mindanao.

Sea Travel: Extremely Dangerous

• Waves may reach up to 9.0 meters in Occidental Mindoro’s seaboards.

• Coastal waters in Central and Southern Luzon, Romblon, Marinduque, and Visayas are forecast to be very rough to high seas.

• PAGASA strongly advises all vessels to remain in port.

What’s Next?

Opong is forecast to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) tomorrow afternoon, Sept. 27, but not before leaving a trail of rains and winds.

Disaster officials urge residents in high-risk areas to follow evacuation orders and stay tuned for local advisories.
